stage one

the rocket made it through security.  I'm not typing in the terminal so that nobody has the chance to pre-emptively ask me not to type on the plane

got it

my shopgoodwill auction just closed and I won with a bid of $28.
Of course, with tax and shipping it tops out over $47 but look at the close-up of the typebars.  See how they are ALL CAPS?
This is an example of a radio telegraphy "mill" I've been seeking, the hunt for which got me collecting typewriters in the first place.
They were selling two of these at the same time - the other had not been painted green and went for $49+.

Hermes Rocket - it seems to type a bit smaller than elite - 13 cpi?

If I decide to take the typewriter I *will* type on board, armed with vintage photos of business people doing the same.

groovy purple script

typewriter bone?

The "typewriter bone" (love that phrase btw, wish I'd thought of it) has been busy recently.  My shopgoodwill disappointments I now suspect were to get me to really decide what I'm willing to spend, and get my head around higher bids on something truly special.  One such has come up but I'll leave it to the readers to guess at it and hope I don't end up in the bidding war I anticipate.  My meager savings can go somewhat higher than my past efforts but not to the levels of, say, pink Royals.
Wish me luck!
Oh and there's an Underwood 315 on CL for $25.  It looks a lot like (pedestrianism) Ryan's Lettera (googling indicates it is much the same, not like the 319 at all) and his is a sweet typer.  But I can't let that divert resources from the prize above.  I mention it for the other locals.

Classic 12 sn 6LT2 154713

This one has the older switches, NO power spacer, and the half space is off to the left side.  It ends up being much smaller than my other classic 12's.  I had no idea they made them this style.  I hope I can get the year of manufacture.

I didn't need another Galaxie

...but I think you'll agree that for $5.00 it's interesting enough to add to the collection.

how do I read the number in there and look up the name?

skunked again by shopgoodwill

The typewriter collectors are snapping up the good small ones.  The Hermes sold this evening for $37.66, eleven bucks more than my max, and that Olivetti eventually went for over $60 and I had dropped out at $32.

I *am* a novelist! Chris Baty says so!

shopgoodwill update

I'm out of the Olivetti and bidding (less, due to higher est. shipping) on the Hermes.
It doesn't end until the 11th so I doubt I'll get that one either, but if I lose it has cost me nothing to play and Goodwill still benefits.

Galaxie Twelve!

oops make that 1977
worst camera ever.  the good one has dead batteries

next book

short typecast

Quotes from Mortimer Adler's "How To Read A Book" 1940
"I have tried to write a light book about heavy reading."
"You can be just as wrong in agreeing as in disagreeing. To agree without understanding is inane.  To disagree without understanding is impudent."

"One is hopeless about the fruitfulness of discussion if one does not recognize that all rational men can agree...the point I am trying to make is that disagreement is futile agitation unless it is undertaken with the hope that it may lead to the resolution of an issue."

"The poet has so directed our faculties that, without being aware of how it happened, we have enjoyed an experience, not of our own making but of his.  We have not received something from him, as we receive knowledge from a scientific writer.  Rather we have suffered ourselves to be the medium of his creation.  He has used words to get into our hearts and fancies and move them to an experience that reflects his own as one dream might resemble another.  In fact, by some strange manner of effluence, the poet's dream is dreamed differently by each of us."

I've put in a bid on this.  If you're after it, I'll drop out at about 32 bucks - I wanted it about 50 max with shipping if possible.  That's very high for me, so I don't know if I'll be relieved if I lose.
wish me luck, or go ahead and take it big spender - just let me know who gets it if it's some typospherian.

busy weekend

Still playing with the new Brother Echelon 91 - it has a soft platen and an interesting lever that spins it up to 12 lines.  It's another of my "like new" machines, though I do need to replace the ribbon. Funny how those are not all that much better performers than the hard knocks ones...
Then I felt like typing purple script again so I switched.
